Wedding entertainment planning does not need to be stressful, but it does need to be intentional. The decisions you make about music, photo booths, lighting, and special effects affect the atmosphere of every phase of your day. from the ceremony to the last dance. This guide walks you through the entire process in the order things actually need to happen.
6 to 12 Months Before: Book Your DJ and Photo Booth
This is the most important step and the one that has the hardest deadline. Popular DJs book out months in advance, especially for Saturday weddings during peak season (May through October). Book your wedding DJ and photo booth as early as possible to secure your preferred team. At Presto, this is also when we assign your DJ so you can start building a relationship with them early.

3 to 6 Months Before: Plan Your Timeline
Your DJ will schedule a planning session to walk through your wedding day timeline. This covers ceremony music selections (processional, registry signing, recessional), cocktail hour and dinner music style, reception timeline (introductions, first dance, parent dances, speeches, cake cutting, bouquet toss), and any special moments that need specific songs or cues. This session is also where you discuss your lighting and any special effects you want to include.
1 to 3 Months Before: Build Your Song Lists
We use a three-list system that gives you full control without requiring you to build a complete playlist. Your Hot List is must-play songs. first dance, parent dances, and tracks you absolutely want to hear. Your Not List is songs you never want played under any circumstances. Your Sought List is the genres, artists, and vibe you want your DJ to follow throughout the night. Your DJ uses these lists as the foundation and fills in the rest based on their experience reading your crowd.
2 to 4 Weeks Before: Confirm Details
This is when your DJ confirms the final timeline with your wedding planner and venue, reviews the vendor load-in schedule, confirms equipment setup locations and power requirements, and finalizes your song lists. If you have a photo booth, your custom template design is finalized and approved during this window.
Wedding Day: We Handle Everything
On the day, your DJ arrives early for setup and sound check, coordinates with your photographer and planner on timing, manages all music and MC duties throughout the event, and runs the photo booth, lighting, and effects if those are part of your package. You do not need to manage anything entertainment-related. that is our job. Enjoy your wedding.
Common Questions Couples Ask During Planning
Should I allow guest song requests? It depends on your crowd. You can allow open requests, allow requests with your DJ as gatekeeper (they play requests that fit the vibe and redirect ones that do not), or set a no-requests policy. Your DJ will walk you through the pros and cons of each approach.
Do I need an MC or can the DJ handle it? Every Presto DJ is also a trained MC. They handle introductions, announcements, and transitions as part of the standard service. If a friend or family member wants to MC, your DJ coordinates with them seamlessly.
When should the photo booth open? During cocktail hour through the end of the reception is the most common setup. This gives guests something to do during the gap between ceremony and dinner, and keeps the booth active during the dance party.
Is uplighting worth the investment? If your venue has white or neutral walls, absolutely. Uplighting is the single biggest visual impact per dollar you can add to a reception space. It transforms the room and makes everything photograph better.
